Where it comes from
Layt is a learning ground I picked on purpose. Photos, video, sound, export: that is where the hard parts of mobile sit, and there are dozens of apps of the kind to go and borrow ideas from. I opened the repository on 11 June 2026, and it has been on the App Store since 2 November.
What it does
Layt puts photos and video into a layout, and exports the result. That is all. 102 layouts, 13 aspect ratios, from square to vertical. Written for myself first, because every comparable app ends up hiding its basic features behind a subscription.
Ten seconds, not ten minutes
A layout, your media dropped into the cells, an export. There is no tutorial to follow.
Photos and video together
Cells take both. The export comes out as JPEG or MP4 depending on what you put in.
No watermark
No logo forced into a corner, no crippled free tier. The image that comes out is yours.
What it taught me
That a feature tucked behind an icon does not exist.
One test session was enough to show that three of Layt’s features could not be found: albums behind a magnifier, the sticker editor behind a long press, « Re-detect » at the bottom of a panel. None was broken — nobody could find them, myself included. Two months later the same complaint came back about a fourth one. The rule I drew from it holds for everything I have made since: making a feature reachable does not make it known, and the word has to appear where the user necessarily goes.

The status is said plainly, including when it is not flattering.

It solves my problem. Whether it is also somebody else’s problem is the question.

No, never. The app makes no network request at all. Everything is processed on the phone.

To read the ones you pick and save the result. Nothing else is read.
